The Engraved work of David Teniers (1610-1690)
October 24th, 2015-January 24th, 2016

The popularity of the Flemish painter David Teniers is related to his genre paintings marked of a touching realism but also in the distribution of his Work trough the engraving.

In his lifetime, his famous village fairs mixing farmers and middle-class person in wide external views, his scenes of inn with smokers and drinkers, his monkey tricks, witches caves or alchemists secret workshops inspire numerous European engravers of the 17th and 18th centuries who reproduce more or less faithfully the masterpieces of the great master.

Proof of his unwavering success: in the 19th century, the painters will continue to copy Teniers based on his engravings, even going so far as imitating his signature!

With more than 60 engravings, included sometimes their related painting, the exhibition explores the mechanisms of this fascination: a clever mix between philanthropy and mockery. By the small dormer, enjoy the vigorous scenes “à la Teniers” (Teniers Style)!
